History and Creation of the Park

Established in 1972, Manuel Antonio National Park was created to protect the area’s diverse ecosystems and wildlife. Initially covering an area of just 683 hectares, the park has since expanded to 1,983 hectares of land and 55,000 hectares of marine territory. This expansion reflects the increasing recognition of the park’s ecological importance and the need to preserve its unique habitats.

The park is home to an astonishing variety of flora and fauna. Visitors can encounter two- and three-toed sloths, capuchin monkeys, howler monkeys, and the rare and charming squirrel monkeys.
